In Aot, Erd was a firm and responsible leader who had a strong sense for duty. Although he was reserved, his words were clear and direct when he spoke.
He was rational because when Eren accidentally changed his arm, he and Gunther were the only ones to ask about the transformation and his intentions. This was unlike Petra and Auruo who only threatened him with assassination.

BATTLE ARCH at TROST
Erd and Gunther were part of an expedition. They were placed in a support group selected by Petra to assist Levi and the wounded soldier. Gunther, Petra and Erd are all surprised that Levi sets out on his own to kill the titans. Commander Erwin informs the expedition that the titans have made their way towards the city via a breach in the wall.

ARCH OF THE FEMALE TITAN
Erd and the rest of their team head to Research Headquarters after Eren’s trial at the Stohess District. Erd complains that the headquarters is not being maintained properly upon his arrival. Levi then orders everyone to clean it up. The Special Operations Squadron has begun planning their next expedition a few hours later.
Also, Erd and the other members of the group leave the room after Hange arrives at Levi’s request to lend Eren for his experiments. Eren then asks Eren about the experiments. Erd and his companions then see a strange, hooded soldier. Gunther misunderstands him for Levi but it is too late. The soldier approaches Gunther quickly and cuts his throat. This causes instant death. Erd witness this strange cadet killing his teammate. Auruo questions Erd about where they should go. He replies that they don’t have enough time to get to the horses, so they should notify HQ.
They all witness the transformation of the strange soldier into the Female Titan, but it’s too late. Erd warns Eren not to transform. He tells him to hurry to HQ and they will kill the Female Titan. Erd insists that Eren transforms. However, Erd tells Eren that this is the best thing and that his power is too risky. Eren listens and flees the scene. The battle between the Levi’s Squad members and the Female Titan starts at that moment. Erd is killed in front of his fellow comrades.
Erd speeds up towards the Female Titan, throwing a smoke bomb at her that blinds the titan. This allows Petra (and Auruo) to enter her eyes using their blades. The titan is then completely blinded for a short time. Erd orders his team to make the most of this moment and to attack every muscle in her arms to disable them.
Their arms were completely broken and their necks had been freed, so they needed to attack their necks. Just as Erd was about to trim the titan’s right side, the titan decided to focus on the recovery of its right-eye to make it easier. Erd is grabbed by the titan with her mouth, and she cuts him in half using her teeth. Erd then falls to the ground with the rest of her body that was emitted by the Female Titan.
